Young Island Completes Refurbishment And Goes Green

Other additions include a completely refitted main swimming pool now with fresh water, and a new pool deck.

A special spa treatment room has been added where guests can pre-book massages, body polishes, manicures, pedicures and facials.

Resort owner Vidal Browne will be at World Travel Market in London November 14-17 to discuss the refurbishment and launch the resort’s new brochure ( St Vincent and the Grenadines Stand, Caribbean Village )

Young Island is also currently working hard to achieve Green Globe 21 certification and become a fully environmentally friendly resort *.

Made up of 29 cottages scattered across the island, it has introduced a series of initiatives including water and electricity conservation, recycling paper in offices, collecting rain water for use in the laundry, using environmentally friendly cleaning products.

Trees and shrubs on the island have also been named and labelled and donations are being made to a local home for the poor.

A ‘Green Team’ has been formed at the hotel in order to drive the programme forward and an environmental policy has been developed which is posted at Young Island’s front office and a copy is left in each guest room. The resort is hoping to be considered for Green Globe certification by the end of this year.

Young Island is an excellent base from which to explore nearby St Vincent, one of the Caribbean’s undiscovered islands of natural beauty which featured in the Hollywood blockbuster Pirates of the Caribbean and ‘appears’ again in Part 2 of the film currently being shot. Stars of the film including Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightly stayed at the resort during filming.

In addition, experienced snorkellers staying at the resort may well be lucky and see one of the resident seahorses that frequent Young Island’s northern coastline.

* Green Globe 21 is the worldwide benchmarking and certification programme which facilitates sustainable travel and tourism for consumers, companies and communities.

It is based on Agenda 21 and principles for Sustainable Development endorsed by 182 governments at the United Nations Earth Summit in 1992.
