Due to the recent stagnation of UK retail sales, many retailers are suffering from squeezed margins and cash flow. Some retailers are expanding to the overseas market to recover from the UK’s negative sales growth. Retail employment reportedly fell by 0.4% in the second quarter of 2011; therefore, there are now 3,100 fewer retail jobs and it appears this employment slump is showing no signs of recovery in the near future, as the retail employment monitor fell by 0.2% in April, 0.4% in May and 0.7% in June. This is also the first time that the retail jobs monitor has recorded a decline in three consecutive months.
It appears that non-food retailers have been hit the worst by the decline in employment, as 25% of the retailers stated they plan to reduce their staff levels throughout the quarter. On the flip side, there are always success stories even in challenging environments and many companies who are focusing on quality of product, value and service turning in some solid results. Likewise, retailers are a highly entrepreneurial bunch constantly evolving their businesses and sniffing out new opportunities, and retailers who are on their game recognise there is an opportunity to steal a march on their competitors during these times. The bottom line is in a tough market place you need to employ the best people that you can in order to stay ahead of the competition and to ensure stability and growth.
