Sun Microsystems Signs Hundreds of New Customers in Fiscal Third Quarter
Hundreds of new customers chose solutions from Sun Microsystems ( Nasdaq: SUNW ) in the company's fiscal third quarter, further demonstrating its momentum in markets as diverse as financial services and education.
Sun is experiencing customer traction in many areas of the company's product portfolio, including Solaris 10, Java Enterprise Systems, Sun StorEdge products and Sun's comprehensive lines of SPARC® and AMD Opteron-based Sun Fire servers. The technology manages everything from user identities at Sabre Holdings in the U.S. to the results of high-energy particle physics experiments at the University of Sheffield in the U.K.

Not only are customers happy with our solutions and service, but they are coming back for more," said Jonathan Schwartz, Sun's president and chief operating officer. "We're excited about the demand for new products such as Solaris 10, the world's most advanced open source operating system, which has topped a million downloads. We're also continuing to see customer interest, especially on Wall Street, and among technical and academic computing environments."
Recent customers around the world choosing Sun include:
AirG ( Canada ) -- Using Sun's Java technology, Sun Fire Servers and Sun StorEdge technologies, this leading developer and distributor of mobile communities and multiplayer games strengthened its high-performance infrastructure to deliver guaranteed access to hosted Java 2 Platform, Micro Edition J2ME( TM )based applications.
Auna ( Spain ) -- Amena, operator of mobile telecommunications belonging to the Auna Group, has selected the Java Enterprise System for the design and development of value-added mobile services. More than 40 Amena services run on the Java Enterprise System platform. The collaboration between Sun and Amena also includes the presence on the operator platform of more than 300 Sun servers and storage systems.
BioSS ( UK ) -- Biomathematics & Statistics Scotland ( BioSS ), an organization providing research, consultancy and training in mathematics and statistics to the Scottish Executive Environment and Rural Affairs Department and its sponsored Institutes as well as high-level computational skills to private sector clients, has purchased a Sun StorEdge 5310 NAS system to provide central storage for their UNIX®/Windows environment.
Busan Adventist Hospital ( Korea ) -- To support an expansion to 400 beds, this hospital implemented a new Hospital Information System ( HIS ) based on Sun technology that has more than 1 Terabyte of storage dedicated to pictoral data storage.
Champion Europe ( Italy ) -- To consolidate seven different information systems into a single centralized platform, Champion Europe - one of the leading sportswear brands in Europe - chose to partner with Sun Microsystems as its technological proposal appeared to better suit its particular needs. Champion then migrated its information system on a two-domain Sun Fire 4800 server, supporting both production and development operations.
Concordia College -- Concordia College of Moorhead, Minnesota, selected Sun Microsystems for its campus-wide messaging infrastructure, to replace an existing disparate e-mail system of Microsoft Exchange and SendMail. The new solution will be deployed on existing Sun infrastructure comprised of several Sun Fire V240 servers and a Sun StorEdge 3510 FC Array, all running the Solaris( TM ) 9 Operating System.
CryptoLogic, Inc. ( Canada ) -- Using Sun's Solaris Operating System running on Sun Fire servers provides a strong competitive advantage for companies in the rapidly expanding Internet gaming industry. Canada's CryptoLogic Inc., a pioneer and leading developer of software for secure global online gaming, improved the performance, security and scalability of its platform by transitioning from Sun Solaris 9 Operating System to Solaris 10 for its online gaming software. CryptoLogic's system infrastructure runs on Sun's highly-available Sun Fire servers, providing its customers' players in 240 countries with easy access to their games.
DaimlerChrysler -- DaimlerChrysler selected Sun Java System Directory Server Enterprise Edition as a solution for its global corporate directory encompassing over 400,000 users. With scalability and performance being the key decision factors, DaimlerChrysler has deployed Sun's Java System Directory Server software to provide a centralized authentication directory, and as a building block in the company's application framework.
The D.E. Shaw Group -- The D. E. Shaw Group is a specialized investment and technology development firm whose activities center on various aspects of the intersection between technology and finance. DE Shaw purchased Sun Fire V20z systems for two in-house grids and Topspin infiniband product through Sun.
Harcourt Education -- This provider of educational materials for the K-12 market installed Sun Fire V480 and V490 servers along with a 4 Terabyte Sun StorEdge 6130 storage system to support its goal of re-purposing its content "anytime, anywhere."
INPS ( Italian Social Security ) -- Italy's Social Security Contact Center serves the needs of millions of Italian citizens around the world through its network of consulates running on a Sun Java Enterprise Directory Server. The solution that was designed using a Sun Java Enterprise System Portal Server has reduced the high management costs of the old network while ensuring the secure transmission of data.
Ithaca College -- Ithaca College, a private college serving approximately 6,300 students in Ithaca, New York, needed to consolidate its storage concurrent with a project to implement a new Student Information System ( SIS ). Implementing a storage area network ( SAN ) based on the Sun StorEdge 6920 system in a multi-phase project, the initial phase includes a 12 TB Sun StorEdge 6920 system, and Sun Fire V890 and V490 servers.
Logistics Computer Systems, Inc. -- The recently acquired remote management arm of Sun's managed services division, SevenSpace, will take full responsibility for LCS' IT operations. This includes management of its help desk, desktops, network support, infrastructure, systems operations and database administration.
Lucent Technologies Inc. -- Lucent will integrate its MiLife Intelligent Systems Gateway with Sun's Java Content Delivery Server to provide robust content management and content workflow for its telecom carrier customers.
Mogneti Marelli Holding ( Italy ) -- Sun designed, for Magneti Marelli Racing Department, a new system to manage telemetry data for Formula 1 teams in real time, using Java and Jini( TM )/Rio technology with the aim of achieving the required performance, to support multiple platforms, such as Linux and Windows, and to provide high availability and location transparency of components.
NHS Tayside ( UK ) -- This provider of primary care and secondary care services across Tayside to a population of approximately 400,000 implemented a Sun StorEdge 5310 NAS system to backup its network to a centralized tape library.
Sabre Holdings, Inc. -- Sabre and Sun have entered into a three year relationship to implement Solaris and Identity Management Services supporting 2 million users, consolidating from 900 mid-range servers to 400 and deploying Sun's Java Enterprise System to 6,700 employees.
Shepway District Council ( U.K. ) -- Shepway District Council has collaborated with Sun to implement a fully-integrated IT solution that enables Web services for around 100,000 citizens. Shepway is the first local council to adopt the new U.K. Government Gateway - a platform for unified online services to provide every citizen with a wide range of government information and secure access to personal accounts such as tax returns, electronic payments and social benefits.
South Carolina Commission on Education -- Implementing Solaris on a series of Sun Fire V490 and Sun Fire V890 servers, and supported by a Sun StorEdge 3310 SCSI, the Commission will now provide an integrated library system with "universal borrowing" to every student and faculty member at six institutions regardless of location or institutional affiliation.
The City of Marghera, Venice Municipality ( Italy ) -- The City of Marghera ( Venice municipality ), in cooperation with Sun Microsystems Italy, realized an IT laboratory for Marghera citizens, the Internet Center "Marghera digitale". The IT infrastructure, designed and implemented by Sun Microsystems Italy, includes more than 30 Sun Ray( TM ) clients, three servers and a software environment with StarOffice( TM ) software & the Sun Java Desktop System.
TV4 ( Sweden ) -- TV4, Sweden's second largest broadcasting channel, has engaged Sun to develop and manage a secure, highly available digital archiving and disaster recovery solution to replace its existing manual tape library system.
University of Nevada, Reno -- The University of Nevada, Reno, uses BIDW for Warehouse financial, HR data and student information. The Sun solution resulted in five-fold improvement in query response times, 50 percent decrease in lading time for financial data, support for more than 200 concurrent users at peak access times and also helped meet management targets of 95 percent availability.
University of North Carolina, Greensboro -- The University of North Carolina at Greensboro ( UNCG ), a public institution more than a century old, needed a fast, reliable, stable and highly scalable storage system to support campus operations. UNCG selected Sun infrastructure that included Sun E2900, V440 and V240 servers, a Sun Cluster 3.1 configuration and two 11 TB Sun StorEdge 6920 systems and deployed them in separate buildings on the university campus.
University of Sheffield ( UK ) -- Sun technology will help add 1.5 teraflops of processing power to the institution's IT infrastructure for post-graduate physics, chemistry and engineering research.
University of Victoria ( Canada ) -- One of Canada's leading universities selected Sun Java System Identity Manager as the foundation its identity management platform. The University relies on Sun to manage identity information for students, faculty and alumni in areas such as academics, payroll, parking, and athletics. The solution includes Sun Java System Directory Server, Access Manager and Identity Manager.
