State-of-the-art IP real-time communication: Siemens to re-equip the European School of Management and Technology
The European School of Management and Technology is a private college offering university degrees for full-time students as well as continuing education programs for careers in management. For its new location, the ESMT has renovated the former government council building in Berlin and converted it to meet the needs of its programs. As a technologically-oriented institute, the School places great demands on the equipment of its information and communication infrastructure and attaches much importance to innovative solutions.
The overall concept from Siemens is based on the real-time IP system HiPath 3000. Approximately 250 IP telephones from the optiPoint 410 and OptiPoint 600 product range will be connected via LAN. The same network provides IP access for the new PCs and notebooks from Fujitsu Siemens. This lays the necessary foundation for deploying IP-based applications and features that combine the two worlds of data and voice.
A WLAN solution is being designed for the School’s teaching rooms: Notebooks will thus have network access, and telephone calls will be made on the brand new Siemens WLAN telephones, the optiPoint WL2. In the background, the Siemens HiPath WLAN server and the access points, together with IP infrastructure products from the Siemens partner Enterasys, ensure smooth transmission of both data and voice packages.
Students and class participants should be able to use their own laptops in the classrooms. This means that the LAN connection needs to be secure and uncomplicated. Siemens Communications meets this requirement with its smart card solution, the HiPath SIcurity Smart Card. Students, instructors and employees will be provided with a “single sign-on” solution for access to both the data network and the school buildings. With the aid of a role-based allocation model based, each user can gain access to precisely the data, materials and classrooms they require during their studies at ESMT. In addition, the card can also be used to make cashless payments in the cafeteria.
HiPath is the Enterprise Convergence Architecture from Siemens. A comprehensive solution and service portfolio enables companies to further expand their existing voice and data infrastructures, safeguard their existing capital investment, and implement second generation IP ( 2gIP ) applications. 2gIP applications optimize company processes and lead to a sustained improvement in productivity for the corporation. Thanks to the continuous further development of its products and software, Siemens Communications is an innovation leader on the path to a seamless integration of realtime communication in the IT world. According to analysts, HiPath has ensured that Siemens is the world's number one supplier of VoIP connections. Siemens aims to further expand this position. Over 70% of the Fortune 500 corporations have selected a HiPath solution. Customers include BMW, DaimlerChrysler, Deutsche Bank, Ford, IBM, Kodak, SAP, BP and Volvo.
